Ironically, despite being so intelligent, Arima shocks everyone when he says that his dream is actually to be a policeman. Yukino reveals that she remembered finding a bunch of secret police TV show videotapes hidden behind his bookshelf but otherwise, it comes as surprise to everyone else, especially his parents. When Souji asks Arima to go to college so that he can 'make all of Japan safe' by becoming a police commissioner or somesuch, Arima shoots this idea down, saying that his dream is to work with the common man on the task force. This is really hard to understand, but I think that perhaps Arima just wanted to be 'normal' for once in his life instead of being number one all the time. Also, it seems like he has a strong sense of justice. After seeing so much abuse in his family, perhaps he wanted to save others from the same fate by apprehending criminals. Still, he got into the police academy easily and grew up to be a high-ranking detective with lots of honors and accomplishments. The image to the right is from the omake where it shows him dodging a bullet like Neo of The Matrix and his colleagues calling Arima the 'Matrix Detective'. (XD) The last few pages of the series show Arima contemplating taking a promotion at work which he has been avoiding because he wanted to stay as a detective, so it seems like he has the rest of his life to work with the law.
